Pre-conference Sessions for Police

Face It: Elder Abuse Happens: Community of Practice, Taking Action – pre-conference event

This is a closed event for police officers and crown prosecutors.
There is no charge for this event, which includes box lunch and light afternoon snack.

Alberta Seniors and Housing and the Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Council are co-hosting the Face It: Elder Abuse Happens: Community of Practice, Taking Action Conference. Specialized pre-conference sessions are being planned for police on April 30, 2018.

Sessions will include information to assist police officers in investigating incidents of elder abuse, including financial abuse of older adults, tips to interviewing older adults presenting with memory loss or mental illness, understanding the unique psychiatric illnesses of older adults, and the role of the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee.

It’s Not Right. Neighbours, Friends and Families for Older Adults “Train the Trainer”.

Cost: The cost to the participant is $0.00 . The cost of this session is $60.00. The fee is subsidized by Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Council. This includes a boxed lunch, light afternoon snack and It's Not Right. Neighbours, Friends and Families for Older Adults "Train the Trainer" materials supplied on a USB flash drive.

The It’s Not Right Program is designed to have educators who present to the community at large to inform and promote the program. These educators are trained by workshop facilitators. This training will provide the necessary knowledge and skills to be a trainer of those workshop facilitators.
Please note there is a limit of 30 participates.

Rules and Speaker requirements at FACE IT: Elder Abuse Happens – Community of Practice, Taking Action Conference

1. ACCEPTABILITY OF TERMS OF AGREEMENT
Completing and signing this form indicates the speaker(s) accepts the terms of the agreement and will not hold FACE IT: Elder Abuse Happens – Community of Practice, Taking Action Conference.

2. PAYMENT
Speakers must provide Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Council (AEAAC) with an invoice for agreed upon speaker fees and related expenses, as outlined in the speaker agreement. Invoice must be submitted before April 2 for full payment. Payment will be made on the day of the conference, upon completion of the presentation.

3. ASSIGNMENT OF SPEAKING ENGAGEMENT
Speakers will be assigned a date and time to present. FACE IT: Elder Abuse Happens – Community of Practice, Taking Action Conference will make every effort to accommodate special requests. Not withstanding the above, FACE IT: Elder Abuse Happens – Community of Practice, Taking Action Conference retains the right to assign or change speaker time at its sole discretion as deemed necessary.

4. CANCELATION OF CONFERENCE
If FACE IT: Elder Abuse Happens – Community of Practice, Taking Action Conference is prevented from proceeding with the conference, for whatever cause, FACE IT: Elder Abuse Happens – Community of Practice, Taking Action Conference shall cancel the speaking engagement without any liability to FACE IT: Elder Abuse Happens – Community of Practice, Taking Action Conference. Speakers may cancel their presentation with written notification to FACE IT: Elder Abuse Happens – Community of Practice, Taking Action Conference.

5. RESTRICTIONS
Speakers will not provide substitute speakers/presenters without written notification to FACE IT: Elder Abuse Happens – Community of Practice, Taking Action Conference.

Domestic Violence/Homicide with Older Canadians - Lesson Learned from Tragedies

 Dr. Peter Jaffe is a Psychologist and Professor in the Faculty of Education at Western University and the Academic Director of the Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women & Children. He is the Director Emeritus for the London Family Court Clinic, which is a children's mental health centre specializing in issues that bring children and families into the justice system in London, Ontario. He has co-authored ten books, 29 chapters and over 80 articles related to domestic violence, the impact of domestic violence on children, homicide prevention and the role of the criminal and family justice systems. For the past 30 years, he has presented workshops across the United States and Canada, as well as Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica and Europe to various groups including judges, lawyers, health, mental health professionals and educators. Since 1999, he has been on faculty for the National Council of Juvenile & Family Court Judges in the US for judicial education programs entitled “Enhancing Judicial Skills in Domestic Violence Cases”. He was a founding member of Ontario's Chief Coroner’s Domestic Violence Death Review Committee. He has also been instrumental in developing violence prevention programs for schools and has been a trustee on the Thames Valley District School Board since 1980. In 2009, he was named an Officer in the Order of Canada by the Governor General for his work preventing domestic violence in the community.

Betty Jo Barrett is currently the coordinator of the Combined BSW in Women’s Studies and Social Work program. She has practiced as a community social worker in the areas of family violence prevention and treatment, housing stability and homelessness, developmental disabilities, and youth mental health. Dr. Barrett's recent research has investigated variations in women’s help seeking in response to intimate partner violence and the impact of victim characteristics on police response to intimate partner violence in Canada.

Betty Jo will provide an overview of the research and theories pertaining to the bystander effect as they pertain to violent behaviour broadly, the barriers and deterrents to bystander behaviour, and ways to promote pro-social bystander interventions.

The FACE IT: Elder Abuse Happens – Community of Practice, Taking Action Conference is a two-day event which provides a unique opportunities for sponsors to engage with professionals in the fields of health services, police services, social services and government.

The 2018 FACE IT: Elder Abuse Happens – Community of Practice, Taking Action Planning Committee invites submissions from individuals and organizations interested in presenting at the conference. The Committee’s vision for the FACE IT: Elder Abuse Happens – Community of Practice, Taking Action conference is sharing promising practices and taking action to move forward.

This vision should be reflected in your topic/presentation for the conference. During the selection process, preference will be given to presentations using one or more of the following topics:

  • Best practices for raising awareness (i.e. campaigns, projects, events, etc.)
  • Enhancement of skills and tools (i.e. safety planning, assessment, strategies for intervention, coordinated community response, etc.)
  • Rural initiatives (i.e. sharing of best practices/approaches, etc.)
  • Special interest topics: (i.e. LGBQT, working with those who have dementia, mental health of seniors, ethno-cultural approaches, those who use abusive behavior, etc.)
  • Legislation/Protective Laws: (i.e. Landlord and Tenant Act, Power of Attorney, Criminal Code, legislation in other jurisdictions, etc.)

General Information

All presentations must be delivered in blocks of 60 minutes including at least 10 minutes question time, maximum 70 minutes per session. Past participants have indicated a desire for in-depth, practical information that will enable them to go back to their communities with new information and new/different ways of doing things.

On your application form please identify three learning objectives for your presentation.

Speakers may not use these sessions to sell a product or service; they must be educational in nature.

All rooms will be equipped with a laptop and LCD projector for presentations.
Speakers are responsible for their own print hand outs should they wish to provide them.

Please complete the Presenter Information Form and attach the following:

  • Presentation Description: a description of your presentation in sufficient detail to allow for evaluation of the content. Maximum up to 200 words.
  • References: Provide a list of recent speaking engagements/video links and a minimum of 2 references.
  • Speaker Bio: a short (maximum 150 words) summary biography for each speaker.
  • Please limit your session to a maximum of three presenters.

Selection of Speaker and Presentation
The Conference Planning Committee will determine the selection of speaker(s) and presentation(s). Successful applicants will be contacted by end of November 2017.

Margaret works closely with organizations and community groups on projects of system and social change. After graduating from university in 2002, she entered the public service and held portfolios in victim and children’s issues in the Ontario Government. In 2009, she joined the Centre for Research and Education on Violence against Women and Children (CREVAWC) at the University of Western Ontario in London as a Research Associate. Her work at CREVAWC includes program design and development for provincial and national projects. Margaret is passionate in her belief that everyone has an important contribution to make in creating safe and healthy communities and that we need to engage all members of our communities in the building process. “It’s Not Right” Neighbours, Friends and Families for Older Adults provides public education and training using an innovative bystander approach to engage and support neighbours, friends and family members as potential first responders to situations of abuse of older adults. Margaret will speak about the three year New Horizons pan-Canadian project to develop a shared approach in teaching everyone to recognize warning signs of abusive behaviour and how to respond safely and supportively using practical everyday skills.
